New rules for crossing the border: How a car inspection will help avoid trouble

Recently, at the borders with EU countries, customs officers have begun to selectively check the availability of technical inspection of cars. This innovation applies to everyone planning a trip to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova. Now, when entering these countries, at checkpoints you may be asked to provide a document confirming passing a technical inspection. In case of its absence, you may be refused entry to the country.

This new practice has already led to numerous inconveniences for drivers: lost time, additional costs, changes in plans and stress. To avoid such troubles and to be sure that you will cross the border without problems, it is worth passing a technical inspection on your car in advance.

What you need to know about technical inspection of cars

Technical inspection for passenger cars (categories M1 and N1) has become mandatory for crossing borders with some EU countries. This requirement stems from the Vienna Agreement of 1997, which regulates the conduct of international technical inspection of vehicles.

In particular, the countries that have signed this agreement may require the presence of an International Technical Survey Certificate (ISTC). If you do not have an MST, an alternative can be a protocol of mandatory technical control, which is issued by accredited testing laboratories. This protocol must be drawn up on an A4 sheet with a QR code or on a special form that you can get from us.

The mandatory technical control protocol contains the following: "The international technical inspection has been carried out." In addition, an English translation is added, which simplifies the process of checking at borders with other countries.

What categories of vehicles are subject to technical inspection?

Initially, only commercial vehicles of categories M2, M3, N2, N3 were subject to mandatory technical inspection. But after the changes to the Vienna Agreement that took place in 2018, this requirement also extended to passenger cars of categories M1 and N1, which are registered in Ukraine.

This means that if you are planning a trip to Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova or Poland, you need to take care of passing a technical inspection of your car. This will help you avoid delays and unpleasant situations at the border.
