The new WLTP standard: what does it change for car buyers?
What is WLTP?
The Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure is a global standard for measuring fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and other pollutants from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. It replaces the previous NEDC standard, providing a more accurate assessment of real-world driving conditions.
Changes in Germany Since February 2024, Germany has updated the rules for labeling the energy consumption of cars, which has become mandatory for all car dealerships since May 2024. The new labels now contain detailed information on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions based on the WLTP standard.
Impact on buyers
- Information about energy consumption and CO2 emissions should be clearly indicated on car labels and in advertising, both online and offline.
- Buyers get more accurate data about real fuel consumption and range, which helps them make informed decisions.
- A 10-year CO2 cost estimate and a clear classification by CO2 emissions make it easier to compare cars.
- Labeling requirements for different types of vehicles (diesels, electric motors, hybrids, etc.) provide greater transparency.
Impact on the Ukrainian market The introduction of WLTP in Germany will lead to the appearance of more realistic information about cars on the market, which will later affect the secondary market of Ukraine. This will allow Ukrainian consumers to better understand real operating costs and choose cars that meet their needs.
